I recall our first color television set. Our giant RCA black and white was moved upstairs while our new color console from Sears took its place. No remote and only three channels but it was a marvel. Bugs Bunny was so much better in color. One day I looked closely at the picture tube when mom wasn’t watching. She was always telling us to back up from the screen worried that close exposure would hurt our eyes. With my trusty magnifying glass, I examined the tube while Gilligan was inadvertently causing problems. What I discovered where small dots of only three colors, red, green and blue. The principle at work in that old TV is also at work in computer screens, big wall mounted flat panels, and giant electronic billboards. Three simple colors blended to create a multitude of hues and shades

Christmas – Adoration

Christmas, Encouragment
Christmas gifts aren’t all their cracked up to be. We’ve all given or received gifts out of routine or tradition. Like the can of nuts that was hastily wrapped for some grab bag. Gifts can be given because they are expected,  because of manipulation or to manipulate, because of tradition, or given to express our true feelings of love, joy, and adoration. This advent season we’re looking at five words that express something about the Christmas story. Our first word was declaration and looked at the angelic announcements. The second word was the mystery and majesty of incarnation. This week we look at the word adoration and how it fits into the story of Christmas. Luke tells us that the shepherds left their flocks to search out the newborn in the stable. “So they came in a hurry and fo

A few days ago Betty and I traveled to St. Louis to welcome our newest granddaughter, Evelyn Elizabeth, and visit with Mike, Ali, Mackenzie, and Megan. She was born just a few days ago and everyone is doing great. It's interesting to see the difference between the two older girls as they grow into who they are and wonder what Evelyn will be like. Mackenzie loves to entertain, to be the center of attention with a non-stop commentary on the moment. Megan is a climber and I quickly became Grandpa monkey bars. Somewhere between lunch and supper Megan took an inventory of my face and found my eyes, nose, mouth, ear, and “bushy things” meaning my eyebrows. I’m looking forward to watching who each of these girls grow up to be and how they use their likes, dislikes, loves, abilities, talents, and

Somewhere between Persian spices and dead chickens I ran into Denny, one of my favorite sources.  Denny was just a nickname, one he picked up because of his annoying coin flipping habit.  “Denny, whatcha been up too?”

What Are You Hoarding?

Encouragment, Faith
One day a man came up to Jesus and asked Him to judge between his brother and himself in the matter of an inheritance.  What followed was a teaching on greed.  Jesus warned, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” (Luke 12:15, NASB95) Our possessions can take many forms, the most obvious are the physical things that surround us and the Dollars that make up our bank balances.  But, there are also some not so obvious possessions that can become the targets of greed.  Things like time, love, memories, forgiveness, justice, mercy, grace, honor, abilities, spiritual gifts, responsibilities, and rights. We can be greedy on any of these, possessing them but unwilling to give them to others in need

Now what do I do? Levi’s half-way through his story about the magi and the donkey’s ready for my shepherd search.  “The donkey can wait,” suggested Levi. I thought for a second and remembered my editor’s advice, “never interrupt a man that’s talking.” “Alright, lets finish the story,” I agreed. “Each of the Magi carried a small chest as they walked in,” Levi began without noticing that Dan had joined us at the table. “For a few moments they stood and admired the baby cradled in Mary’s arms.  Then one of them, the oldest one I think, began to explain their presence.” ‘We have come from a far off place in search of the newborn king of Judea. The heavens foretold his coming and a star led us to this very house.’ ‘We are told,’ began another, ‘that your scriptures prophecy concerning his b
