Promises: Resurrection

in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.” (1 Corinthians 15:52, CSB)

What a day that will be. “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are still alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17, CSB) On this side of time, we can only imagine.

The promise of resurrection is core to our faith in Christ. Death has no final victory, no final sting, for those in Christ. The promise comforts us when a loved one dies. It gives us strength and hope in a world filled with struggle. It gives us peace when we face our own last breath.

Many religions and philosophies have some concept of an afterlife. To my knowledge, only the Christian faith promises a physical resurrection. We see a glimpse of that when Jesus died on the Cross. “But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.” (Matthew 27:50–53, CSB) These weren’t ghosts or disembodies spirits.

The surety of this promise is Christ’s resurrection. “For we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you.” (2 Corinthians 4:14, CSB) We will be raised. We will be changed. We will always be with the Lord. As the old hymn says – Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine, oh what a foretaste of glory divine.
