Promises: Heavenly Rewards

In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:2–3, CSB)

We now draw to the end of our promise series. Most of the promises we looked at were for today. Some were dual in nature, having both a now and a future perspective. Today’s promise is all future and, to be honest, we only understand a small part of it.

There are many verses in the Bible that provide glimpses of what our heavenly life will be like. A word bubble of those glimpses includes welcomed, comforted, glorified, purposed, rewarded, and present with God. What we do with our faith and love of Christ today lays up treasures in heaven. While our works don’t save us, they are still rewarded. And yet those rewards pale in comparison with the glory of being in God’s glory and presence.

I am convinced that we will be surprised at the rewards God gives. Things little valued here on earth will be greatly rewarded in heaven. Jesus hinted as much. “Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:5–6, CSB) The reward of those little notice prayer closet warriors will far surpass those we lift as celebrities of the faith.

And yet, in heaven, we won’t covet another’s reward but will celebrate with them. I believe we will be like the elders of Revelation 4 and cast our crowns and rewards before the throne. “the twenty-four elders fall down before the one seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne and say, Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, because you have created all things, and by your will they exist and were created.” (Revelation 4:10–11, CSB) That should be our attitude today as we serve Christ as He has called and purposed us. Glory may come our way, but it all belongs to Christ.
