“It will be said about me, ‘Righteousness and strength are found only in the Lord’ ” (Isaiah 45:24a, CSB)
We all arrive at those moments of frustration, inadequacy, and hopelessness. Things don’t go right. What should be working isn’t. Expected outcomes seem as distant as when we began. Like many of the promises we’ve covered over the last few months, this one leans toward looking at the whole picture.
“I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20, CSB) Since we are Christ’s, our frustrations could be more signposts than stop signs. In my experience, frustrations call us to prayer. They cause us to examine our path and to ask if Christ has another plan and purpose for us.
There are also times when we must remember that others and their rebellion may cause our frustration. Again, a call to prayer. People do change, although usually not as fast as we’d like. Children do grow up, sometimes too fast. Things do change. That change is often slow, then all at once. Regardless, we have been crucified with Christ, and our life belongs to Him.
If we fully trust in Christ. If we abide in His love. If we see the brokenness of the world through His eyes. What would we be like? The Psalmist put it this way. “How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers! Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” (Psalm 1:1–3, CSB) Perhaps our frustration is that our fruit isn’t in season yet. Trust in the Lord. Righteousness and strength are only found in Him.
