“while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13, CSB)
The final three promises in David Wilkerson’s little book are about the future. The first of those is the promise of Christ’s return. There are many examples of Jesus telling His disciples that He would return. For instance, “You have heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.” (John 14:28, CSB)
The Apostle Paul also wrote about this promise several times. “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, CSB)
While we do not know when Christ will return, we look forward to that day with ready patience. “You also be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Luke 12:40, CSB)
And yet there are controversies concerning Christ’s return concerning when and how. Christ-followers argue over the various ways this could unfold. And in those controversies, we miss grasping the forest for the trees. Christ is returning. It will not be in secret but obvious and evident (Revelation 1:7). “Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.” (Matthew 24:42, CSB)
Christ could return today, tomorrow, or a hundred years from now. That fact alone brings hope. We are to be eager for His return, ready, and paitent, but also doing the work Christ has put in our hands. We are not called to sit and wait but to do the work of Christ in the love of Christ for the sake of Christ until He returns.
