“The eternal God is a hiding place, And underneath are the everlasting arms.”(Deuteronomy 33:27a, NASB 2020)
I don’t know how they do it. We look at what they do and call it foolish, daredevil, and amazing. Who? Those who intentionally put themselves in dangerous and insecure positions. Folks like free climbers who scramble up the side of cliff faces. Those like the tightrope walkers who cross gorges on a thin cable. And don’t forget those who jump out of perfectly good airplanes to parachute to the ground. Sometimes, we are all insecure; the problem is that we didn’t choose to be there, unlike the folks above.
Feelings of insecurity afflict us regardless of age, wealth, power, or status. It’s just that some are more honest with themselves about it. There is a verse on a card that I’ve carried in my wallet for nearly fifty years. It is a precious promise given to me by my Mom. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13, NIV) That is my run-to verse in times of insecurity. Whatever comes my way today, I am secure in Christ’s strength – even though it feels like I’m walking on a thin cable or a high valley.
There are other promises, which are listed below. But, perhaps, the best verses of the Bible for those insecure moments are the 365 times God (or His messengers) say “fear not” or “don’t be afraid.”
The disciples were in an insecure place. Jesus had sent them ahead in a boat trying to row across an inland sea. Then a storm came up. They struggled to make headway but the wind was against them. Tumbled by waves, they see Jesus approach them, walking on the water. That caused even more insecurity. “When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and they cried out in fear. Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:26–27, CSB) And that is what Jesus says to us in our moments of fear and insecurity – Take Courage, I’m here with you. Don’t be afraid.
Some of us know what insecurity we will face today, for some, it will be an unwelcome surprise. In either event the words of Jesus are His promise to us. Take Courage, I’m with you. Don’t be afraid. Just know that changes everything.
