Promises: Hung Up with Guilt?

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,” (Romans 8:1, CSB)

Guilt is like fire. Fire can cook our food, heat our homes, and improve our daily lives. However, it can also destroy homes, businesses, and lives. Guilt, through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, reveals our sins and opens our eyes to how we have wounded others and to things from our past that we have not brought to God for forgiveness. Guilt, through condemnation, robs our faith with unworthiness and keeps us from resting in Christ.

Of all the promises in The Jesus Pocket Promise Book, this promise has the most scriptures. If you’ve accepted Christ as Lord and Savior and brought your sins to the cross in confession and repentance, then you are forgiven! “So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.” (John 8:36, CSB) We are no longer condemned in the eyes of God.

Two things stand in the way of feeling free. The first is the regret we feel as we observe the still-present fruit of our sin. The wrong we did long ago ripples through time. While the sin is forgiven in Christ, the repercussions remain, reminding us of our failure. We can trust Jesus with our regrets as well as our desires.

The second thing that stands in the way of feeling free is the whispers of Satan. He loves to remind us of our sins. He can’t change our position in Christ, but the reminders of regret make us feel unworthy, incapable, and unwanted. All lies of hell. The Bible says, “I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13, CSB) I’ve learned to take those whispers to God. Jesus said to “come to terms with your accuser” in Matthew 5:25. When Satan reminds me of my past, I agree with him and run to God in confession of that sin (even if I’ve done that a hundred times). He hates that.

The Bible says, “Come, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are crimson red, they will be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18, CSB) What can do this? What can wash our guilt and sin away? The blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7-9) No human heart is so stained with sin, guilt, and regret that Jesus’ blood can’t cleanse, redeem, and forgive. It is up to us to turn towards Him and cry out, “Yes, Lord.”
