Promises: Does Your Life Lack Direction?

in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:6, CSB)

Everything is in motion; the question is, where is it going? Some of that movement is blisteringly fast, and some is glacially slow. We all experience that variety of movement. Some things in our lives move too quickly, while others seem never to change. And yet the question remains: Where are we going?

One of God’s promises is to give our lives purpose, meaning, and direction through Christ. Like a shepherd leads sheep, our savior leads and guides us. “The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” (Psalm 23:1–3, CSB)

And yet, life can be chaotic, seemingly meaningless motion. Life can also seem stagnant and without change. But Christ is guiding us no matter what our world is like. “Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me.” (Psalm 139:7–10, CSB)

Here’s the big thing: while God gives us a grand destination of an eternity in heaven with Him, He doesn’t always give us the complete picture of how he is leading us. Life may seem chaotic or stagnant, and yet Christ is leading us into His will for us. All He asks of us is to be obedient at each moment and to let His Word be a lamp for our steps. “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105, CSB)

Our problem is that we often look for the big thing, the significant ministry, the big purpose when all God wants of us today is to offer someone a cold drink of water. It is a small thing in our eyes but a big thing in His Kingdom. Each step of humble obedience moves us toward God’s plan and purpose for our lives.
