Promises: God Will Bless Your Family

I will give them integrity of heart and action so that they will fear me always, for their good and for the good of their descendants after them.” (Jeremiah 32:39, CSB)

We pass on so many things to our children. Their physical appearance comes directly from us through genetics. Their first language is learned from their family. Habits, traits, likes, and dislikes are both learned and inherited. This doesn’t mean that a son will be totally like their father; they are their own person with all their own uniqueness.

The promise of God to bless our family isn’t about health or wealth, as the world measures things. The blessing is most simply stated in John 10:10. “A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.” (John 10:10, CSB) Through faith in Jesus, we experience the grandest of blessings. We experience love, joy, and peace. Our interactions become steeped in gentleness, kindness, and forbearance. Our life choices are guided by goodness, faithfulness, and self-control (see Gal 5:22). In summary, we are blessed to live a life of faithful integrity through Christ.

Living through faith blesses our family now and in the generations to come. I often think about that legacy of faith and the blessings of seeing it unfold. Especially as children and grandchildren begin their journey of accepting and following Jesus. I’ve been blessed to receive that legacy and pass it on to future generations.

Yet, I realize many don’t start with that blessing of demonstrated faith. The promise holds true: God will bless your family as you follow Jesus. Whether they choose to recieve that blessing is up to them. Even in families that have a faith legacy, each person must make their own choice. Each one is a first-generation believer. Faith is not automatic. Our second greatest blessing is when our children and grandchildren choose Christ.
