Promises: Freedom of Surrender

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” (Matthew 5:3, CSB)

An old hymn proclaims – “I surrender all. Yes, I surrender all. All to thee, my precious Savior, I surrender all.” God leaves surrender up to us. In every human interaction with God, from Adam and Eve to today, God always gives us a choice.

Unlike in war, business, or arguments, surrendering to God isn’t a defeat. There are many promises where the “if” is surrender. For instance, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29, CSB) If we surrender our will to Christ, we will find rest for our souls. Surrendering to God’s will is more like unlocking a door than a battlefield truce.

The hard part, though, is the surrender. We like choosing our own path, making our own way, and doing what we want when we want to. Most of the advertising and marketing in the world trumpets the power of “you.” Such as “You deserve a break today” and “Have it your way.”  The importance of “you” is trumpeted in our culture. Both “You do you” and “You only live once” give permission for anything our hearts desire. Surrendering our heart, soul, body, and life to Christ is like swimming against the current.

The key to this promise isn’t what is on the other side of the door. The promise is that God, in all His power, glory, and wisdom, places the choice in our hands. We choose. Surrendering to God’s will is up to us. But this freedom is not a one-and-done moment. Surrender is an everyday choice.

Have you surrendered your life to God? If you’re unsure how to surrender, email me at dale@lambchow.com. For those of us with surrendered lives, the choice continues. What areas of life haven’t you surrendered to God yet? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal those to you. God always has more for us to enter into.
