“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Matthew 24:35, CSB)
God means what He says. With a word, the universe sprang into existence. “Let there be…” (Genesis 1). But God’s words are not some ancient dusty leftovers from the bronze age. They are living and active today.
The Word of God reveals God to us. For those who have ears to hear it, it provides the one thing that all humanity searches for—the purpose and meaning of our existence. The Word reveals God’s will and speaks to our past, present, and future. This revelation is given to all who open their ears and hearts to God’s Word.
The Psalmist wrote, “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105, CSB) God’s Word illuminates our path and shows us the way to go, one step at a time. In my experience, His Word is brightest when the world is darkest. Earlier this year, I went through dark times when God spoke through His word very clearly. He even guided me to the verses that directly applied to that moment, that step.
God’s Word will accomplish its purpose in history and in our lives. God says through the prophet Isaiah, “For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return there without saturating the earth and making it germinate and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so my word that comes from my mouth will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do.” (Isaiah 55:10–11, CSB) God’s Word will not return void, empty, or fruitless.
How do we open our ears to hear? Those prescriptions are as old as the word itself. Read the Bible, talk to God in prayer, fellowship with others walking the path of faith in Jesus Christ, and put God’s word into action through willful obedience. The more we take those daily steps, the more our life walks in God’s Word.
