Promises: Brings Hope

For you are my hope, Lord God, my confidence from my youth.” (Psalm 71:5, CSB)

Hope always has a focus. We look towards where we expect our hopes to be satisfied. That could be some distant event, an opportunity, or better times. The promise of God in scripture is that He is our hope.

Psalm 121 says, “I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1–2, CSB) My help comes from the Lord, for He is my hope.

Holding on to that hope is not as easy as it sounds. We are easily distracted and try “fix” our problems ourselves. We place our hope on our ability, our skills, and our manipulation of others. While we may see a season of success, we ultimately fail. Perhaps finding that what we hoped for didn’t fix our real problem. That kind of hope is a string easily broken.

Hope placed in the Lord, however, is not easily broken. “so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.” (Hebrews 6:18–19, CSB) In Christ, the curtain of the temple that separated God from His people is torn in two. He is our hope. “This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:5, CSB)

Our hopes always have the possibility of disappointment. The thing we hope for may not come to pass. But when we focus our hopes on God, there is no possibility of disappointment.

This is where we must examine the promise of hope. Where does our help come from? Where are we looking in hope? As we grow and mature in the Lord, He reveals areas of our life where He is not yet our hope. God is encouraging us, cheering for us, to seize the hope set before us in Christ fully.
