A Better Me

What’s wrong with you? Come on, be honest. When you look in the mirror what would you change? If you could hold a mirror up and see your heart, your personality, your passions, and your attitudes – What would you change there? A friend of mine recently quipped, “I’d like a better me.” I think that we could all say amen to that.

We all have things we don’t like about ourselves. It could be that our nose is too big. Our hair is graying. Or maybe it’s straight, and we want it curly. Or curly and we’d love for it to be straight. Some of these things we can temporarily change, many we can’t. Since I was a teenager I’ve had a malformed ribcage, basically my sternum forgot how to grow. So what about you? What would you change?

Maybe your thing isn’t a physical attribute but something else like your temperament or some other attitude that makes life hard at times. We all have those as well. I wish that I could be less fearful and more outgoing around others. What about you?

Here’s some good news. God is in the transformation business. Well, I shouldn’t call it a business because He doesn’t sell it as a product – He gives it away to all that ask. Consider these verses from the Bible.

Those that follow Jesus have this promise, “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.” (Philippians 3:20–21, NASB95) One day our bodies will be transformed to be like Jesus’ glorified body.

And consider, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2, NASB95) God can even transform our minds, change our thinking about so many things. But most importantly He can change them to better understand what God is up to in this world and in our lives.

Lastly, take a look at this one, “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18, NASB95) As we look to Jesus, we are changed. Not just once for all, but over and over again like a sculptor who chips away at a block marble to reveal something wonderful.

We’d all like a better me. I know I would. But it takes being honest with ourselves. I’m not OK, and neither are you (contrary to a popular saying from the 70’s). We all need to be changed no matter where we are in our faith walk. Keep looking to Jesus, and I can guarantee that you will be a better you. Perhaps even in ways you’ve never even dreamed of yet.
