Eli’s Cure for Stress, Anxiety, and Worry

Eli’s Cure for Stress, Anxiety, and Worry

There’s one thing that I’m glad I don’t remember from my childhood - the stress and anxiety over potty training. I’ve relived it with my children and now they are going through the process with their children.  Dealing with the accidents, the attitudes, the anxiety of learning and teaching this one basic life skill in huge.  On top of that is the stress the child goes through - its pretty hard to go when you’re all tensed up. A few days ago Rebekah sent the video below. What the camera doesn't show is that Eli is sitting on a training potty chair while singing his song. Asher joins in to encourage and celebrate with Eli. https://youtu.be/L0kQIxJegEo It seem to be easier say “casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7, NASB95) than really doing it when

Of Butterflies and Mini-vans

A few days ago our granddaughter Mackenzie showed us a monarch butterfly while we were Facetiming. The story goes that their mini-van developed a strange electrical problem.  Michael had just unlocked the door to retrieve something after he closed the door the lights started blinking for no apparent reason.  He tried different things to make them stop but nothing worked.  A buddy from their church diagnosed the problem as a bad battery and offered to come over and change it.  They found the butterfly under the old battery and gave it to Mackenzie.  Here’s her explanation after overhearing parts and pieces of the conversation between Michael and their friend.  Mackenzie reported rather matter of factly that, “The van broke because the butterfly got under the battery and lost all of its juic
Let It Go!

Let It Go!

My granddaughter Mackenzie is enamored with the Disney movie Frozen.  She loves to sing and dance along with the princess’s song - Let It Go.  She knows all the words and the motions, which is quite an accomplishment for a three and a half-year-old. I’ll add in a grandpa kind of way that her performance is very cute.  Of course she’s cute anyway, but even more so as she sings and twirls with the song. To be honest, I haven’t seen the movie, I know a little bit about it, but the movie and why the character is singing this song is not the point of this article.  What does matter are the three little words from the chorus of the song - Let It Go?   There are several things that we are supposed to “let go” as we follow Christ.  One is our worry and anxiety. “casting all your anxiety on Him, b
Conflict:Peace vs. Control

Conflict:Peace vs. Control

Encouragment, Peace
What is it about humanity that desires peace and longs for conflict?  We want our lives to be as peaceful as a mountain lake on a still day; perfectly reflecting the world around us.  Yet, business, sports, novels, shows, even the news, must have conflict and challenge to hold our attention.  Essentially, we find peace to be boring, beautiful perhaps, but tiring. There is a third element that must be considered to understand the desire for peace. The element of control.   When our lives are filled with anxiety and worry, when there is trouble in the family, when our job is a frustrating mess, we may say we want peace but often we are really desiring control. Peace then is not defined by the absence of conflict but of maintaining some form of control in the conflict. Ever notice that when
